OUR STUDENTS
This year, we have 24 recipients (freshman-seniors), who are attending a wide range of colleges and universities. Once again, we have successfully found young promising students who have great potential and have shown a willingness to unselfishly help others. In 2011, we added 2 students from the Denver Scholarship Foundation and another 2 students from the Breakthrough Program at Kent Denver.

THREE DOCTORS AND AN ENGINEER!
Recipients selected from Denver Scholarship Foundation

Rodolfo “Rudy” Segoria – Rudy graduated from North High School with an impressive 3.70 GPA in May, and is now attending Colorado State University. He has been a mentor to elementary students and has been heavily involved in the Colorado Uplift Program for three years. In high school, he was involved in baseball, football, fundraising, and he became part of the National Honor Society. With a difficult home life, Rudy is determined to break out of the stereotype of growing up in the inner city. His dream is to become a pediatrician.

Humberto Escobedo – Humberto transferred from Aurora Central High School to the Denver School of Science and Technology during his sophomore year to focus on his interest in medicine. While at DSST, he founded the Community Health Club. Under his leadership, the Club executed a health fair and several health education programs for the DSST and Stapleton communities. Humberto is the first person in his family to graduate high school and is now attending the Univeristy of Denver, where he is pursuing a Chemistry degree in anticipation of attending medical school upon graduation. Humberto would also like to serve his community by becoming a pediatrician.

Recipients selected from Kent Denver’s Breakthrough Program

Raechelle Fields – Raechelle went to Montbello High School in Denver where she excelled at math and poetry. She participated in the Breakthrough program as a young student and then came back every summer to teach. Raechelle truly enjoys working with young people. As a member of the National Honor Society she participated with the Boys & Girls Club, mentored elementary school students, and helped organize a blood drive. Raechelle is attending Colorado State University. Her goal is to become an engineer and support or start a non-profit organization that helps others.

D’Andra Mixon-Walker – D’Andra attended Bishop Machebeuf High School where she played varsity tennis and ran cross country. During the summer, she spent time working for a non-profit organization – All About Kids. She worked at sporting events through this organization to help pay for books for college. D’Andra’s family had some serious health issues and accidents when she was younger. As she watched the doctors tend to her family, she became more and more interested in medicine. D’Andra is attending the University of Colorado in Denver pre-medicine program. She hopes to one day become a physician and perhaps even a surgeon.

A NEW DIRECTION - Partnership With the University of Denver

Going forward, the Kimmy Foundation is taking on a new and exciting direction. We have collaborated with the University of Denver to create the “Kimmy Foundation Endowed Community Service Award Fund”. DU is matching our contribution to this fund! Each year, we will be selecting one DU graduate who is going into a community service type of employment following graduation. This Endowment will give a substantial annual cash award and plaque to this graduate to recognize their past and future contribution toward society. This award highlights our efforts to support those who give to others and lead the way toward helping their community. We will still be supporting our existing students until they graduate, then we plan to move full time toward this partnership.

The Kimmy Foundation stands behind our mission – to support youth who exhibit creativity, character and compassion. We feel that we will be making a significant difference in the life of a college graduate who has chosen a career path to help others in need. Please help us encourage our young people to give of themselves by donating funds to the Kimmy Foundation. We want to inspire future generations to give back to others, as Kimmy did during her lifetime.

Thank you for taking the time to read through our new story.
